Working a season in Alaska

Alaska is the most concentrated seasonal labor market in the U.S. — most of the year's work happens between mid-May and mid-September. Cruise ports like Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, and Skagway fill with retail, tour, and hospitality jobs that run on the ship calendar. Denali, Talkeetna, and Girdwood draw lodge, restaurant, and guiding crews on a slightly earlier and longer arc.

The fishing fleet is its own world. Cordova, Kodiak, Petersburg, Wrangell, and Homer hire deckhands, processors, and dock workers for salmon, halibut, and crab seasons. The pay can be exceptional, but the work is hard and the housing is rough — many processors include bunkhouses or RV space, and some don't.

Most workers fly in for the season and fly out. Winter hiring is minimal outside of Anchorage, so plan around a 4-5 month window and budget for travel days on either end.
