Working a season in California

California's seasonal economy is the most diverse in the country. South Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes drive winter hiring with two of the largest ski operations on the West Coast, then pivot to summer mountain biking, fishing, and lake recreation. Mariposa and El Portal feed Yosemite's spring-through-fall demand for park staff, lodging, and restaurant crews.

Napa and Sonoma run on a different calendar entirely — tasting rooms hire spring through fall, with harvest crews coming in heaviest from August into October. Wages tend to be higher than other seasonal regions, but so does the cost of living.

Housing is the consistent challenge across all of California's seasonal hubs. Many resorts and parks operate dorm-style worker housing; outside of those, expect to share or commute from a less expensive nearby town.
